Why is the world so big? (One for the dreamers)

If the dreams dreamers dreamed were small, life would be but a walk in the garden.

But nobody ever died trying to reach their garden gate. And nobody ever sacrificed it all to buy a little plant pot. It is the bigness of a dreamer’s dream that weighs heavy; it is the larger-than-life nature of their dreams. They feel called up out of themselves, beyond their limits, to some huge and unthinkable life in a new world. But dreamers are going nowhere unless they come to terms with, and overcome, The Great Dilemma. It is the fork in the road we all come to. The choice between two options that defines lives all over the world. Will you run away from your dreams and risk the pain of unfulfilled desire, or chase your dreams and risk the pain of failure? Most dreamers had a time in life before they stumbled upon this dilemma. It was a beautiful time of childhood innocence. They watched a hero pull off something mind-blowing in a movie, and something inside them said, one day I will do the impossible. They heard a musician nail the final note of a European tour, and they said, one day I’ll tour the world. They saw someone they love achieve something big, and they said, one day I’ll do something gigantic. When they were young, everything was possible. When they played with friends, they were pioneers finding new lands. They were global superstars in front of adoring crowds, award-winning chefs cooking up storms, princes and princesses ascending the staircases of their own castles. But there came a fateful day when they had to jump from the innocent heights of childhood. They were sure the wind would catch them and take them beyond the clouds. But the air fell still and silent. They fell down through that air, and landed with a thud on the rocky terrain below. In reality, the fall looks different for each one. It may have been a friend laughing when they sang their heart out; the girl they loved ignoring the poem they wrote; the adults telling them to shut up when they shared their big idea. I want to be great, the child says in their fading heart, but it hurts too much to try. The Dilemma hits home. The child must choose. Do I chase my dream, or run from it? But here you are, here I am, not a child anymore. We can run away from our dreams and our callings; many people do. It seems easier not to try. But before you continue to choose this option, I need you to ask yourself a question. Ask yourself this: why is the world so big?  “Sorry, what has that got to do with anything?” I hear you say. Stay with me. For a moment, think of the height of the Himalayan peaks. Or imagine the grains of sand that shape the whole Sahara, and the drops of water that fill the Atlantic Ocean. Consider the depths of the Grand Canyon, the width of Russia, the distance between Norway and New Zealand. And ask yourself again: why is the world so big? Here is the only satisfying answer I can find: The world is so big because the creator of all things made a world that matches the size of the dreams he put in your heart. He made his world big on purpose. Every broad plain, every deep canyon, and every thundering waterfall is dripping with intention. Your dreams are as big as the world – and it’s time to chase them.
